The Law Office of M. E. Ludt is a general practice. We practice those areas of law that most people and small businesses need and use regularly. We support our neighbors by practicing in those areas of law that are needed to protect the community we live in. These practice areas include traditional and progressive legal issues. We are experienced at handling many legal matters, including:

  • Divorce & Traditional Law: What will happen with the children? The property? The family business? This practice includes pre-marital agreements, legal separation, divorce, paternity, child placement, custody, child support, maintenance, adoptions and name changes.
  • Criminal & Traffic Defense: Handling all traffic, DUI, misdemeanors, and felonies, the firm is experienced and talented at addressing every allegation from a speeding ticket to murder charges; even if there are no charges yet but just a brush with the law, you are wise to consult with an attorney to keep criminal charges from materializing. If it worries you, you need legal counseling.
  • Business & Contract Law: Choosing the form for your business, composing the articles of formation, properly insulating the business legally, and drafting reliable contracts are a few of the most important choices you will make about your business. Further, the firm also handles employment contracts, business sales, transfers, and dissolutions.
  • Collaborative Family Law: Akin to the traditional family law litigation, this practice area is used by parties who want to keep the divorce or other proceeding amicable, forthright, and less stressful with the goal of a more comfortable definite resolution in mind.
  • Conservator, Guardian, and Child Protection cases: The firm is practiced at representing vulnerable persons, parents, or interested parties in all juvenile cases.
  • Mediation: A non-litigious manner to resolve disputes, including family law mediation.
  • Cooperatives: Whether they are employee, consumer, or producer owned cooperatives, these community businesses are an important component of our heritage and economy for which legal counsel is often needed to protect these institutions and their growth.

Providing the best service for a client requires the firm to liaise with other attorneys when a case requires specialized expertise. Though the firm is a general practice with considerable experience, no firm can hold expertise in each and every practice area and still be local resource the community can value. There are two reasons you should call upon us to help you with any legal matter that comes about, especially in those practice areas listed below:
  1. When needed, Matt works with attorneys who practice in these areas and as such our collaborative approach results in the firm providing the best service possible to its clients: expertise in each relevant legal field. It would be a shame if someone chose a lesser law firm because they weren’t aware that we can give them great service and address all of their legal issues (those legal issues we practice and those of our colleague attorneys) just because their case involved an area of law that wasn't listed on the website.
  2. Secondly, our work with these other attorneys requires them to be of a degree of reliability and integrity that we would expect if we needed to refer to them a dear family member. We are glad to serve our clients and neighbors by referring them to these trusted professionals as needed. Accordingly, we hope to hear from you for any of your legal needs so that we can provide you with a reliable referral as needed.

  • Agricultural Law: Possibly one of the most important parts of our community, the legal concerns for family-owned farms includes the practice areas of real estate, environmental, injury/liability, and business laws.
  • Bankruptcy: Whether it is debt discharge (Chapter 7), debt payment modifications that your family or business seeks (Chapter 13), or otherwise, the complication of federal law necessitates a seasoned attorney to advise you and guide you through the process.
  • Civil Litigation & Collections: Aggressive advocacy is the necessary characteristic of a great civil litigation practice, both in the courtroom and at the negotiating table.
  • Civil Rights: Our state and federal Constitutions grant each of us with unalienable rights which must be protected and whose violation must be avenged if we are to be free people.
  • Environmental Law: Though this area of law is often left to the non-profit groups and the legislature, our modern world requires educated attorneys who can advise and represent businesses and farmers on the legal impact of their environmental decisions and actions.
  • Estate Planning & Probate: Without an attorney it is too difficult to plan your life and death by drafting a plan that will avoid probate, set forth the right health care directives, reduce estate taxes, grant the appropriate powers to the right people, and make legal distributions to heirs and charities.
  • Immigration: Involving work visas, travel visas, green cards, and citizenship.
  • Insurance Litigation: Addressing client’s needs under the insurance policies, risk management protocol, and defense of frivolous cases.
  • Intellectual Property: Issues include trademarks, copyrights, patents, and business practices.
  • Legislative Advocacy: “They ought to change that law,” is oft spoken but without an advocate in Saint Paul, Madison and Washington D.C., the beliefs of your community won't get the advocacy they deserve.
  • Municipal & Administrative Law: Use strong ties to the community to cut through the red tape of local and bureaucratic requirements.
  • Personal Injury: If you have been injured in a car accident, slip and fall, defective product, or through someone else's negligence, a PI attorney will help you receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, permanent injury, disfigurement, and property damage.
  • Real Estate & Construction Law: Thinking of buying or selling your house or property? Problems with your property title, zoning, easements, or your contractor? You need to have an attorney representing your best interests throughout the dispute.
  • Workers' Compensation: If you have been denied benefits, forced to work in unsafe conditions, or injured on the job, contact our office for a great attorney referral to help restore you to good health and work.
